Turtle Nest Survey - Murrundi Reserve
It’s Turtle Nesting Season!
Freshwater turtles are nesting, and this is a crucial time for their conservation, especially in the Murray-Darling system in South Australia, where their numbers are sadly declining. To make a difference, we need your help in gathering information about their nesting sites. By identifying nesting hotspots, we can implement effective conservation measures to ensure more young turtles thrive in our waterways.
Program for the day:
- Meet us at Murrundi Wetland Reserve, Wellington - 8 am
- Welcome and introduction (1 Million Turtles, TurtleSAT, Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board) – 8:15 am – 8:30 am
- Nest surveying – 8:30 am – 10:30 am
- Refreshments and further turtle talk 10:30 am - 11 am
The survey will involve relatively easy walking for up to 2 hours near the edge of the water looking for evidence of turtle nests that have been dug up by foxes. When we find the nests we will record the location using the TurtleSAT app.
Teacher PD certificate will be shared with any teachers attending.

Please note: if the fire weather forecast reaches Extreme or Catastrophic levels, we will need to cancel and reschedule the survey for a later date. We’ll confirm any cancellations via email after 5 PM the day before the event, based on the latest weather updates.
Let’s work together to protect our turtles!
