Fresh expertise strengthens wetland conservation in the Murraylands and Riverland

Ella brings a strong background in marine science, ecological research experience, and a genuine enthusiasm for wetland conservation.

Ella holds a Bachelor of Marine Biology (Honours) from Flinders University. During her studies, she undertook research projects in areas such as microplastic degradation, shark and ray microbiomes, and coral histopathology.

“I examined the habitat preferences of small-bodied fish in the Port River-Barker Inlet Estuary” Ella said. I looked at how factors like seagrass cover and proximity to mangroves influenced fish abundance and diversity.” Ella added.

As a wetland project officer based in Murray Bridge, Ella will support the landscape board’s environmental watering, monitoring and adaptive management programs. Spring is a critical time for monitoring small-bodied native fish populations in the River Murray and Lower Lakes, and Ella is looking forward to engaging in fieldwork, data collection, and ecological assessment.

“Spring is an important monitoring time for small-bodied native fish” Ella said. I’m excited to get out in the field, observe how populations are faring, and contribute to ecological outcomes across the region.”

Wetland Ecologist, Sam Hardy welcomed Ella’s appointment.

“Ella’s scientific background and field experience will be valuable additions to our wetlands program. Her perspective from marine biology complements our work across freshwater systems, and her enthusiasm will strengthen our conservation efforts.”

This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies
