Nature Festival event shines light on rare snake
Celebrate the wonder of nature with a Nature Festival event, where the spotlight will shine on one of South Australia’s rarest snakes – the Murray-Darling carpet python.
Hosted by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, the family-friendly event will be held on Sunday 28 September 2025, 1 pm to 4 pm at the Overland Corner Hotel.
This non-venomous and shy snake is a threatened species in South Australia, and any community sightings really help build a better picture of their numbers and movements.
Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board’s Threatened Fauna Ecologist, Mel Burford, said the event is about celebrating nature while also supporting conservation.
“Carpet pythons are incredibly elusive, which makes them difficult to monitor. That’s why we rely on the community. Every sighting logged on iSPYthon helps us to understand where they are living and moving, and guides the work we do to protect them, “Mel said.
“They may be spotted on the ground, in vegetation, near waterways, rocky outcrops, in rabbit warrens, in tree hollows, trees, and even pump sheds and crossing roads,” she added.
Carpet pythons are an important part of the River Murray ecosystem, helping to control pest species such as rats and mice. However, habitat loss and predation have made them increasingly rare.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with nature, meet some fascinating native animals, enjoy storytelling, and discover how you can play a role in protecting wildlife.
Registration is essential as places are limited.
This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies.
